For total beginners, I start you off with all the basics; how to hold the sticks, each drum and cymbal, how to listen to the drums in your favourite tracks. I’ll show you how your favourite grooves are played, and teach you how to play them yourself. You’ll learn to appreciate the music you love from a deeper level- and get even more fun out of it!
I have recording capabilities in the studio, so I can record you playing your favourite groove to share with your friends.
Drumming is for anyone, no matter their age or level of musicianship.

We cover more technical topics now:

This is for drummers who can already play, perhaps even professionally, but have no idea how to develop further. Have you peaked? Or is there a next level that you just don’t know about?
Here, we get into the nitty-gritty side of drumming. Maybe you can physically play a groove, but somehow, it doesn’t feel right. When you listen back to it, something is definitely not working, but what? What’s going on here?
I record you and take a scientific analysis of your groove. Together, we’ll analyse why your groove isn’t feeling right and areas to develop. We’ll deep dive into Groove Theory, Cross-Paradigmatic Rhythmic Theory, Swing Ratios, Karnatic Konnakol, African Dances, Alexander Technique, Music Phenomenology, Eurythmics and more…

Perfect for any musician interested in learning how to improvise on their instrument.
Although many people think of improvisation being specific to Jazz, improvisation is much, much more. There are so many genres that utilise this skill; I will teach you the skill of improvisation.
I will guide you through my own approach to improvisation, based on my studies with some of the world’s top improvisers. We’ll cover theoretical aspects, your conception of rhythm, harmony and melody, your aural skills, the phenomenology of improvising, mindsets, states of consciousness and more.
I have taught improvisation to Harpists, French Hornists, Guitarists, Pianists and Saxophonists. It really doesn’t matter what instrument you play- we can all improvise!

What People Are Saying
“Being a classical musician myself, I much enjoyed Laurence’s teaching. Our lessons are challenging and fun! Laurence is very didactic in his way to teach Jazz. I had the opportunity to have an initiation to Jazz on my instrument, the harp, and I could sense a real evolution between each lesson. Those lessons are so enjoyable and I would fully recommend him”
— Sara, Professional Harpist
“As someone who has only recently picked up drumming I strongly recommend Laurence for anyone looking to pick it up or improve at their skills. His lessons are fun and engaging, making it easy to learn new techniques and enjoyable to learn them. He is incredibly patient and always takes the time to explain concepts in an easy-to-understand way, tailoring each lesson to my skills while also introducing unique and challenging exercises which motivate me to improve. Would HIGHLY recommend!”
— Gemma, Intermediate Drummer
“Laurence was able to quickly pick up on my strengths and weaknesses and help me identify areas where I needed to improve. He then taught me useful methods to improve on those areas and was very good at reminding me basic techniques (i.e stick holding, hand position, breathing, etc.). He was complimentary towards my advancements and judged the best times to step in and demonstrate and the best times to allow me to figure out techniques on my own. I didn’t at any point feel what we were doing was a waste of time – we would always talk about the context of the techniques we were working on which I think motivated me to want to continue learning”

About Me
Laurence has a First Class Honours degree in Jazz from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and 4 years of tutoring experience. He teaches musicians of all levels, from complete beginners to professional musicians.
During his time at Guildhall, he played and studied with Ivo Neame (Phronesis, Marius Neset), James Maddren (Jacob Collier, Gwilym Simcock, ENEMY), Will Glaser (Soweto Kinch), Nikki Iles (Kenny Wheeler), Mark Lockheart, Tom Farmer (Empirical, Tim Garland), Trish Clowes, Barak Schmool (F-IRE Collective, Django Bates), Stuart Hall (Hermeto Pascoal) , Josephine Davies and Kaidi Akinnibi (Black Midi), amongst others.
He was born and raised in Manchester and started drumming young. He first picked up the sticks when he was 3yrs old, bashing his cousin’s beautiful Yamaha to pieces. Laurence’s first love was Muse, The Stone Roses and just about whatever XFM played on the radio. A brief Prog Metal phase got him into complex music, which naturally led him to a fascination with Jazz. Convinced at age 15 that Jazz drumming was what he wanted to do for a living, he worked hard, eventually cumulating in going to London and study Jazz at the Guildhall.
